The fact that the telephone charges (both landline and cellphones) in Mexico are very expensive is nothing new:
“Telmex, Mexico’s dominant and near-monopoly telephone operator has a very tight grip on the Mexican communications market, despite the opening up of its communications network to competition; a pre-requisite of Mexico’s entry to the WTO (World Trade Organization).
As a result, telephone charges are still high by American and European standards, and relative to local earnings — extremely high”.
And clear proof is the highest cost of sending sms message from Skype. While the whole world rates vary between US$ 0.047 and 0.235 (excl. VAT), the rate for Mexico is … US$ 0.312 [from http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/smsrates/?currency=USD]
No surprise that Carlos Slim (Telcel and Telmex CEO) is possibly the world richest man….
